Illinois is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education and the state of Illinois. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.
Funding Available - First-Time Candidates State Funding
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has limited funding to provide assistance with the candidate fee subsidy for the National Board Certification process. Priority will be give to Illinois certified teachers and school counselors who meet the ISBE established criteria as outlined on the 2008-2009 Illinois National Board Candidate Fee Subsidy Application.
Educators seeking information on Illinois NBPTS candidacy support should visit the National Board Resource Center at Illinois State University, the I-KAN Regional Office of Education and the Illinois State Board of Education Website for updates.
Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Illinois State Board of Education will utilize NBPTS Candidate Subsidy funds, and as available, State funds to support candidates. Candidates must meet NBPTS eligibility guidelines. Funding Available Retake Candidates
The National Board application window closed January 31, 2008. If you applied online at the NBPTS Web site as a 2007-2008 retake candidate on or before January 31, 2008, ISBE is in the process of submitting payment for one retake. Please monitor your My Profile account, and call 1-800-22TEACH if you do not see this payment posted to your account within 14 business days after January 31.
Please note that ISBE will not know to fund applications for any retake candidate who, on the National Board Certification application, did not agree to release their name to third-party agencies offering support, incentives, or rewards. If you did not agree to the third-party agency release, you can change this designation on your My Profile account and then contact ISBE to request retake funding.
Funding Available - First-Time State Funding for Take One!
Take One!® is a unique offering from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® that provides a standards-based approach for improving teaching practice and links student learning to effective instruction. Teachers prepare and submit one pre-selected video portfolio entry from any of the current certificate areas of National Board Certification. A teacher can later transfer the score if he or she pursues National Board candidacy. Illinois State Board of Education will pay the $395 Take One! fee by following directions below:
The National Board Resource Center at Illinois State University will complete a transmittal so Illinois State Board of Education can transfer funds directly to the National Board on your behalf.

Also, visit ISBE’s web page.In May 2000, the State Board of Education began issuing Illinois Master Certificates valid for 10 years and renewal thereafter every 10 years through compliance with requirements set forth by the State Board of Education for NBCTs. Illinois state appropriations provide an annual $3,000 stipend for National Board Certified Teachers who hold the Illinois Master Certificate as defined by statute – Illinois Teaching Excellence Act. In addition, NBCTs are eligible to receive an additional $1,000 if they provide 60 hours of Assistance/Mentoring to NBPTS Candidates and/or Professional Development/Mentoring for new or experienced teachers. NBCTs providing Professional Development/Mentoring to teachers in schools on AEW status or schools where 50% or more of students receive free and reduced lunches are eligible for $3,000.
