State Information

This page reflects the most recent information available to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards at the time of posting. Incentives listed below are offered at the discretion of the individual local agencies or contracts and are subject to change. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is not responsible for the accuracy of the information found herein. Please contact the appropriate local or state agency directly to confirm the incentives listed and contact us with any updates at outreach@nbpts.org.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky allows for the following incentives for its first-time NBPTS Candidates as sufficient funds are available.

Upon completion and submission of the Statement of Intent form found on this link Statement of Intent NBC-1. The Commonwealth of Kentucky allows for the following incentives for its first-time NBPTS Candidates:

  • Reimbursement to the candidate’s district for substitute teachers - used to provide up to five days of release time for the candidate to assist in preparation of National Board Certification
  • Up to $400 stipend once candidate’s portfolio is submitted to assist with assessment center preparation
  • Mentoring services from National Board Certified Teachers throughout the certification process

Note:  The $400 stipend for the NBPTS candidate and the substitute teacher reimbursement are contingent upon funding from the General Assembly.  Funding may not be available for 2009-2010 to offset these costs.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky allows for the following incentives for its National Board Certified Teachers:

  • Upon certification, up to 75% reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses of the National Board Certification fee paid by the candidate.
  • A $2,000 annual salary supplement for the life of the certificate each year the National Board teacher teaches or mentors in the subject and grade range in which he/she holds National Board Certification for 50% or more of their time, as stipulated in KRS 157.395.
  • Teachers holding National Board Certification may mentor NBPTS candidates.  A local school district or cohort may submit a proposal to the Education Professional Standards Board to pay a stipend to a National Board Certified Teacher who serves as a mentor to candidates.
  • Teachers who achieve National Board Certification can apply for Rank 1 from the Education Professional Standards Board.  Rank 1 is the highest rank in Kentucky and allows an increase in salary for teachers based on the local district pay scale that considers educational level and experience.
  • By signing the NASDTEC agreement with some other states, Kentucky agrees to honor a teacher education program from another state; it does not mean Kentucky will honor any certificate given by another state.  For example, Kentucky will review any alternative certification method.  To achieve a Rank 1 via National Board Certification, a teacher must gain the teaching certificate and have what Kentucky would consider Rank 2 status before the National Board Certification (in a subject area recognized in Kentucky) moves the teacher to Rank 1.
