Tennessee Candidate Financial Support

Tennessee is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Tennessee Department of Education will utilize NBPTS Candidate Subsidy funds to support candidates at 50 percent of the certification fee as long as subsidy funds are available. Candidates are responsible for submitting the unsubsidized portion of the fee to NBPTS. Applications will be reviewed to determine eligibility and candidates will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates must meet NBPTS eligibility guidelines. Funding Available Retake Candidates
Tennessee does not provide funding for retake candidates.

State Information


The Tennessee State Board of Education adopted a resolution encouraging teachers to seek National Board Certification, and has incorporated the NBPTS Five Core Propositions, and the INTASC standards into the Tennessee teacher licensure standards and its framework for Evaluation and Professional Growth.

Tennessee will:

  • Recognize participation in National Board Certification as a fulfillment toward license renewal requirements and reflect National Board Certification on the license
  • Provide candidate support through a partnership among networks that includes the State Board of Education, the State Department of Education and the Tennessee Education Association as well as several colleges and universities. In addition, the State Department of Education, through the Office of Professional Development, serves as a resource to the candidates as they pursue National Board Certification and pays NBCTs to provide mentoring support to candidates.
