Vermont Candidate Financial Support

Vermont is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information:

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates State Funding
As part of the Vermont Educator Quality Initiative, the Vermont Department of Education will pay up to $850 of certification fee on a first come, first served basis. Candidates should complete the online application process including the payment of the $65 processing charge, their $500 initial nonrefundable fee (unless this fee is paid by their district) and submit proof of their completed application to their district.

Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Vermont Department of Education will utilize NBPTS Federal Candidate Subsidy funds to support candidates on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates must meet NBPTS eligibility guidelines. Teachers interested in using candidate subsidy funds to help with the fee MUST submit their NBC application through the program administrator. Deadline to apply:  December 1, 2008

Funding Available Retake Candidates
Vermont, through its Educator Quality Initiative, will provide funding for retake candidates for up to three exercises. Candidates still apply for funding through the State Department of Education-Candidate Subsidy Coordinator.

Several organizations provide scholarship support to candidates pursuing National Board Certification. For more information, visit the Scholarship page.

State Information


• The Vermont Department of Education will award those teachers achieving National Board Certification, regularly engaged in teaching in the primary and secondary classroom, an annual stipend of $1,000 for the first three years of certification (based on availability of state funds.)

• Candidate support has also been provided through the Vermont Accomplished Teaching Collaborative for coursework and mentoring for National Board candidates.

• The state of Vermont has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and will award their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any Member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding experience, degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness, and completion of any post-baccalaureate study required by the receiving Member.
