National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Announces New Addition to Board of Directors

ARLINGTON, VA. – December 05, 2024 – The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announced today the election of Princess Moss, Vice President of the National Education Association, to its Board of Directors.

"I am thrilled to welcome Princess Moss as the newest member of our Board of Directors. Our Board represents a diverse array of expertise and perspectives, and I am confident that Princess will play a vital role in advancing our mission," said Peggy Brookins, NBCT, President and CEO of the National Board.

Princess Moss was elected during the National Board’s November meeting. A respected elementary music educator and public education advocate, Moss joins 28 other professionals from the education and business sectors who serve three-year terms on the NBPTS Board. This includes Board Chair Dr. Travis Bristol, associate professor of teacher education and education policy at the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Education. A majority of the Board members are National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), active classroom teachers, and educators of color.

“We know National Board Certified Teachers have a profound, measurable impact on student learning,” said Dr. Bristol. “To meet our mission, the NBPTS Board and staff are deeply committed to increasing the number of National Board Certified Teachers nationwide and advancing policies that ensure every student has access to excellent teaching. I am excited to welcome Princess Moss, who joins a Board with rich expertise and a shared passion for elevating the teaching profession.”

The National Board also announced the departure of Dr. Mae Jemison, former NASA astronaut and the first African American woman in space, from its Board of Directors. Dr. Jemison has been a valued member, contributing her unique perspective and leadership to the organization.

More than 137,000 teachers nationwide have achieved National Board Certification, demonstrating that they have met the profession’s highest standards for accomplished practice. National Board Certification is available in 25 certificate areas, from Pre-K through 12th grade.
